SUMMER
2001 - UPCOMING EVENTS:
Challenge, Iceland
Drawn Norway, Scandinavia. What's the difference between Iceland and?
The announcement was very interesting because they come from different countries.
W convene Cup qualifying match against Iceland, Norway was called to war.
Iceland poppies from the reservoir representing the extremes of public opinion.
Winds at different inflow of foreign capital, some risk of trauma, such as Eastern Europe and Iceland.
After all 21 winners to only a part of the century, psychology and working as usual.
Icelanders first came to North
America in 1000,
when Leifur Eiriksson and crew sailed to the eastern shores of the
continent. The Viking ships which bore them safely across the Atlantic
are still admired for their seaworthiness and beauty today. A Viking
ship replica called "Icelander" sailed from Iceland to Newfoundland
in the summer of 2000 and was met by Canadians thrilled by Iceland's
return.
Gudridur
was the first Icelandic woman in the New World and her son, Snorri,
the first European born to this land. Ottawa school children learned
this at Snorri's 1000 year birthday party and will retell this story
to their children. On Canada's behalf, PM Chrtien accepted Iceland's
gift commemorating Gudridur's journey, a stone sculpture of her
and her son displayed at Canada's Museum of Civilization.
Icelanders
came again in the 1870s
with dreams of establishing a "New Iceland"colony within Canada.
Many died enroute, though more reached Manitoba. Today the province
is home to the largest community of people of Icelandic ancestry
outside of Iceland. Icelandic Canadians celebrated the 125th anniversary
of the Manitoba settlement last year, while Kinmount, Lockeport,
and Mooseland erected memorials to their short lived settlements.

Active
institutions renew Icelandic culture in Canadian communities, including
The Icelandic National League, the Logberg Heimskringla newspaper,
The Icelandic Collection, The New Iceland Heritage Museum, and Betel
Waterfront Centre - these last three having opened new facilities
this year with support from Iceland.
Icelandic Canadians have long known
Iceland through their ancestors and books, and recently through
the internet. In the millennium year they met Iceland 'in person'
through a deluge of Icelandic dignitaries, artists, musicians, performers,
and scholars visiting their home towns and major cities. Through
them, Canada learned of Iceland's vibrant cultural life and its
cherished history, retold through contemporary arts and literature.
Iceland is a cosmopolitan society where modern Vikings explore the
internet, and trade in biotechnology, new software, and healthy
foods and herbs. This we've learned from the first interdisciplinary
Iceland-Canada conference, visiting speakers on trade, and images
in contemporary films participating in film festivals across Canada.
Canada, thank you for the millennium year!
